Devon Street in Chicago is one of the most liveliest places for Hyderabadis in U.S.A. and for lack of better comparison it is just like Charminar always bustling.
Here you will find people from Indian sub-continent everywhere and whites are a rare commodity. There are quite a few Hyderabadi stores and there is a restaurant called Hyderabad house which is the best. It reminds you of Kausar cafe outside Anwar-ul-uloom or Medina building near naya pul. In this restaurant you will find all kinds of familiar faces. I met quite a few of my old friends here. People have laid back lives as in Hyderabad and sit back to chat and share jokes for hours, discussing Hyderabad and its politcs or discussing good old days. Our cabbie friends also patronize Hyderabad house quite a bit. Back on the street you will whatever Indian stuff you need. Be it halaal meat, newspapers, sweets or phone cards. Indian Independence day parade is held on this street every year and lot people take part in this Parade, Mohammed Azharuddin was also in the parade this year making it more lively. Local Politicians from Chicago take this opportunity to show their solidarity with voters from Indian ethinicity and the politicians are at the forefront of this parade. |
