Corruption is a big problem in most parts of the world and Hyderabad is no exception. The famous line adopted to give corruption a respected name is to say "Chai pani ka Kayal" . It can vary quite a bit. "Chai pani ka kyal" could vary from handing out tips of few rupees to taking bribes from hundred to lakhs of rupees. Tips are demanded from people in all walks of life, whether you deal with a high ranking government offical, you hire a autorickshaw driver, petrol pump attendant or a office peone. They all want a quick extra buck. I would rather not compromise to corruption but unfortunately that is the way of doing things in India.
- The minute you land at Hyderabad airport the custom officials want some.
- Porter will lend you a hand if you are willing to part some of your dollars or dirhams.
- The taxi or autodriver will not drive you until he gets double of normal fare.
- The petrol bunk attendant will round off to the nearest rupee and keep the rest of the change to himself.
- Try to take a cinema ticket and you will hear a shady character shouting near the entrance "dus ka bees".
(maybe the rates have gone up now). - Try to get a gas cylinder delivered and you will not have any luck until you agree for the bakshish.
I am running out of some of the places where you would need to grease the palm little bit. It would be nice if readers contribute some of their own experiences. |
