As roads in the twin cities come apart, officials of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and roads and buildings department are squabbling over jurisdiction instead of beginning the repair work. GHMC maintains around 4,000 km of roads in the city while R&B department is responsible for 153 km including the inner ring road which connects Aramgarh, Mehedipatnam, LB Nagar, Uppal, Mettuguda, Tarnaka and Begumpet.
The National Highway Authority of India is supposed to take care of the other important route from Miyapur to Dilsukhnagar via Kukatpalli Ameerpet, Khairatabad, Assembly, Koti and Dilsukhnagar. "Apathy of R&B officials is the main reason for potholes on important routes where lakhs of vehicles move every day. But citizens are cursing the GHMC though it is absolutely the fault of the R&B," said a GHMC senior official. R&B officials said that important routes were handed over to the GHMC and Hyderabad Urban Development Authority which is constructing flyovers at Punjagutta, Greenlands, Nalgonda crossroads and the elevated expressway between Mehedipatnam and Shamshabad. As these two squabble, motorists are left to best negotiate their way through potholes. The daily rain over the last week has opened fresh potholes, exposing the poor quality of work done the last time round. Slush and mud has accumulated on many roads, making them unsafe to drive. The interior roads are even worse. Added to this are the roads broken up to lay pipelines, for example on the Mettuguda-Tarnaka-Habsiguda-Uppal stretch. "We agree that the Habsiguda-Uppal road is in a bad shape but restoration can be taken up once it stops raining. We have already allotted Rs 1.8 crores and called for tenders to recarpet the road," said Mr K. Sudarshan Reddy, R&B executive engineer. |
