Yahya Alaihi Salaam(PBUH) is a son of Zakariyah Alaihi Salaam(PBUH). Almighty Allah Subhanawatalah granted this child with wisdom and knowledge in his infancy itself.

From his childhood, Yahya Alaihi Salaam (pbuh) worshipped and glorified Almighty Allah Subhanawatalah. Among his qualities mentioned in the Holy Quran, is the fact that he was always kind to his parents and never spoke to them harshly. He would eat dried bread or leaves of the tree and would put on coarse cloth. It is said that Yahya Alaihi Salaam was yet a young boy when others called him to play, he used to tell them: Men are not born to play away their lives.

His miraculous birth

Prophet Essa Alaihi Salaam was not the only Prophet who was born miraculously. By miraculous, we mean outside of the normal process of human reproduction Almighty Allah Subhanawatalah has ordained which requires a man and a woman to conceive a child. In the case of Essa Alaihi Salaam he was born of a mother but no father.

But Adam Alaihi Salaam (PBUH)’s birth was even more miraculous in this sense since he was created with no mother or father. The birth of Yahya Alaihi Salaam is miraculous because he is the offspring of a barren mother and an elderly father Prophet Zakariyah Alaihi Salaam.

Zechariah said "My Lord! How shall I have a son when old age has overtaken me and my wife is barren? He said: ‘Thus shall it be; Almighty Allah does what He wills.’"

Yahya Alaihi Salaam was well educated about the divine commandments as laid down in the Torah (Taurat). He used to teach people the religious principles and asked them to stay away from sin. He was particularly serious in discharging his duties as a Prophet and would not hesitate to speak out if he thought that a wrong action was being committed.

Cause of Yahya Alaihi Salaam’s assassination

One day, Prophet Yahya found out that the King of Palestine,  wanted to marry his niece (brother’s daughter). He was extremely angry, because this sort of marriage was against the religion and had been forbidden in the Torah. His views that this marriage should not occur began to spread around the country, and people began to gossip about the king’s unlawful relationship with his niece.

The King's Niece  wanted to marry the king without delay because she dearly desired to become Queen of Palestine. When she heard of Yahya Alaihi Salaam’s objection to the marriage, she became his deadliest enemy.

Once when the king was indulging in wine and music, she appeared in front of him in a shameless manner. The king became more infatuated with her than ever and promised to give her anything she desired. She demanded that Yahya Alaihi Salaam be killed as soon as possible. The king, who had lost all control of his senses in his love for his niece, issued the order for murdering Yahya Alaihi Salaam.

When the scholars of the faith came to know about it, they went to the king and tried to make him understand that what he was doing was wrong, and told him if a drop of Yahya Alaihi Salaam's blood was shed on earth, no vegetation would grow at all. But the king remained firm in his decision. One of the courtiers suggested that Zakariyah's prayer was always granted by Almighty Allah Subhanawatalah, so he should be killed first otherwise he will curse to king for the assassination of Yahya Alaihi Salaam. This was agreed and the king's army went to Zakariyah Alaihi Salaam's house.

Both Zakariyah Alaihi Salaam and Yahya Alaihi Salaam were praying when the king's army caught hold of Yahya Alaihi Salaam but Zakariyah escaped and hid in a tree which had split to afford him shelter. A part of Zakariyah’s clothes was visible, hence the king’s men decided to cut the tree, by means of a saw. When Zakariyah felt that he was being cut, along with the trunk of the tree, he heard a voice. Beware Zakariyah! If you raised any voice or complained your name will be removed from the list of the patient ones!

Prophet Zakariyah was cut by the saw without any complaint or shouting.Soon afterwards, the king’s courtiers brought yahya Alaihi Salaam before the king and brutally murdered him. However, wherever the sacred blood of this noble Prophet of Almighty Allah Subhanawatalah  fell, it began to boil. It was suppressed by heaps of sand, but it continued to boil. Finally, a sand hill was erected over it, but the blood still kept on flowing. This miracle only stopped when Bakhtun Nasr invaded Palestine and avenged the innocent blood of Yahya Alaihi Salaam  by putting 17,000 people of Israelite (Banu Israel) to death on that sand hill. Prophet Zakariyah martyr at the age of two hundred and seven (207) years and his son Prophet Yahya was martyred at the age of ninety five (95) years.
