Tennis star Sania Mirza talks about issues close to her heart, her focus, tennis, films, love and marriage
Sania is getting feelers from Bollywood, after filmmakers dubbed her ‘perfect Bollywood material’. The golden girl comes clean on the issue and talks about other things close to her heart.
You currently hold the 27th spot according to WTA rankings. What next? For me, ranking is just a number and it is more important to play well, to constantly improve and to get some big wins against top level players. If I do this, I know that the rankings will automatically take care of themselves. I believe I was playing just as well when I was ranked in the 60s at the start of the year – though nobody wanted to believe me then!

You faced health problems for a long while in the beginning of the year. Did that shake your faith somewhat? I am a great believer in the Will of God and perhaps, that’s my biggest strength. Injuries are a part and parcel of any sportsperson’s life and one has to learn to take the rough with the smooth.

Recently there have been speculations about you being glamourous enough to become a film star. How does it affect you? I have denied it a hundred times over the last few years because I will never do films. Yes, it irritates me a bit that certain sections of the media make such baseless conjectures. My aim is to reach the highest levels of tennis... nothing else.

Where does marriage and love figure in your success story ?
These will be the most important things in my life when I am done with my tennis career.
Sania Mirza
